An upgrade to a major version operating system, such as upgrading from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 to 8, causes an outage in Puppet Enterprise.

Solution

We don’t support upgrading a major version operating system of an existing PE deployment. Upgrade the operating system with PE requires you to:

1. Back up PE on the existing server.
2. Build a new server with the upgraded major version OS.
3. Restore the PE back up on the new server.
