Run different but compatible versions of Puppet Enterprise and Puppet agent on your infrastructure and agent nodes

Many organizations upgrade Puppet Enterprise (PE) on their infrastructure nodes and Puppet agent on the rest of their nodes at the same time. However, in situations including but not limited to testing code and custom modules for compatibility, you can upgrade PE on your infrastructure nodes before upgrading your agent nodes later on.

In many cases, when you use a newer version of the primary server with older agents, features in the newer version won’t work on the agents, but Puppet runs work. Before you proceed, check the primary server and agent compatibility chart in our documentation.
